Barlean Coconut Oil $1.61 million False Advertising Class Action Settlement 2023

Have you ever used Barlean’s coconut oil products? If so, you may be eligible to receive a cash payment from the Barlean’s Coconut Oil Products Settlement! Barlean’s has been sued for falsely advertising that its coconut oil products can help reduce cholesterol levels, improve immune system health, and reduce the risk of heart disease. As part of the settlement, those who purchased Barlean’s coconut oil products between January 24, 2015, and November 10, 2022, are eligible to receive up to $35 in cash without providing proof.

The class-action lawsuit against Barleans Organic Oils claims the company has misled consumers with false advertising and marketing related to their coconut oil products. The lawsuit alleges that Barleans used deceptive health claims such as “Nature’s Most Versatile Superfood,” “A Natural Source of Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs),” “Coconut Oil Boosts the Metabolism, Supports the Heart and Immune System, and Provides Quick Energy,” and “Harvested at the Peak of Flavor and Nutrition.”

In response, Barleans denied all the allegations but agreed to pay $1,612,500 as settlement costs to avoid further legal proceedings against them. Barleans also agreed to an injunction that forbids them from using these misleading statements on their coconut oil products. This includes phrases like “no trans-fat or cholesterol” and “a healthy alternative to butter.” Barleans also agrees to have 180 days from the date of the final approval order to remove any of these claims currently in use on their coconut oil products.

Can I join the settlement?

If you purchased any of the following products between January 24, 2015, and November 10, 2022, you could be entitled to a cash payment:

• Barlean’s Organic Virgin Coconut Oil (16-, 32-, or 60-oz.)
• Organic Butter Flavored Coconut Oil (16 or 32 oz.)
• Barlean’s Organic Cuisine
• Gourmet Coconut Oil (32 or 60 oz.)

Eligible class members can receive up to $35 for each product purchased without providing proof of purchase. However, those who have proof of purchase can receive up to $50 for each product purchased.

In order to make a claim, you will need to provide proof of purchase (such as a receipt) and your contact information.

Benefits

Class members of the Barlean’s Coconut Oil Products Settlement can receive up to $35 in reimbursements. This amount may be reduced or adjusted on a pro-rata basis depending on how many class members submit claims.

• If you do not have evidence of purchase, you can claim up to five products worth $3 to $7 each.
• If you have proof that you purchased the product, you will get a full refund.
• Additionally, any remaining funds will be distributed to Tufts University’s Friedman School of Nutrition or another approved nonprofit organization.

The deadline for filing a claim is Thursday, January 19, 2023, so if you are an eligible class member, don’t wait any longer to file your claim and receive your settlement benefits.
